About Me
First and foremost, I\’m a follower of Christ. I have a beautiful life the Lord has blessed me with and I owe all of it to the glory of God. God has been spinning my trials into gold and I am where I am today because of my faith. I am a devoted wife and mama to two sweet little treasures. My knowledge base started in customer service and sales after graduating with a degree in Political Science. Shortly after this career progression, I changed paths and entered the Nursing world. My experience and background is in Postpartum/Mother Baby and the last 5 years I have spent in the Emergency Room. The ER is my passion and always has been.
I\’m an avid gardener, yogi, and runner. My recent hobbies include biking. I have ALWAYS been a writer and have been writing since I was in my teens. My husband and I are currently building our homestead in San Diego, California.
My Story
My story begins with a look into what got me here! So, buckle up.
For years I have struggled with insulin resistance primarily due to PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). In more ways than one, it has impacted my life, my pregnancies, my family, and my career.
After spending many years chasing a healthy lifestyle and an answer to all my hormonal issues, I started to realize something big. What if everything we knew about health and medicine was something that had been fabricated?
My biggest learning curve in nursing school was learning how to trust solely in evidence-based practice and solid research. Yet, the more I progressed in my career, the more I realized that healthcare wasn’t *truly* following the research on preventative care. Healthcare has internally become a revolving door for medication “Band-Aids” rather than addressing root causes (this isn’t to be confused with all medications: I truly believe in the power of medicine when it is warranted).
A little over a year ago, I made the decision to stop drinking alcohol altogether. For good. It was a faith-based decision; however, it led me to some big physical changes for me that were truly hard to ignore after chasing my mental health issues for quite some time.
Slowly, I noticed my skin changing, my anxiety was letting up, and I was starting to have regular cycles (I’ve never had a regular menstrual cycle in my life). Somewhat personal, but nonetheless: it’s a key indicator of the overall picture of health for women. Menstrual cycles can throw off the balance of so many bodily functions for women. If you’ve ever been pregnant, gone through menopause, etc., you know.
Slowly but surely, I started paying more attention to my health. I was determined to turn it around. I replaced my entire home with nontoxic ingredients and cooking items. But it simply wasn’t enough.
Long story short, I hit rock bottom in December of last year. I realized my brain was just not functioning properly. After several adjustments in my ADHD medications, an internal family conflict, and some significant career issues, it was clear that I was doing too much for everyone and not myself. Not only was I stressed, but I was also a full-time stay at home mom, caregiver, full-time night shift nurse, AND I was balancing other aspects of my life which were becoming increasingly more complicated.
Shortly after my burn out in December, I started noticing an alarming trend in the Emergency Room. Despite the trend happening for the last 2-3 years or so of my career at the bedside, I was even more intrigued at this point after my more recent health struggles. More people were coming into our emergency departments with unexplainable symptoms, then being admitted with cancer diagnoses. It wasn’t a coincidence. In talking to more of my nursing colleagues and friends (even in different areas around the country), they were noticing the same. Seemingly healthy individuals in their 30s and 40s were heartbreakingly having their entire lives upended after being diagnosed with cancer.
For me, the sadder part of the reality was that the more I learned, the more I questioned. Not only was the healthcare system failing, but every single decision being made by us as individuals coming down even to our everyday household products and food choices were being jeopardized. Now if this shocks you, I’m sorry, but it really shouldn’t be a surprise. The same people that are prescribing medications like Aspirin for heart attacks and strokes are also the same people that are selling GMO produced seeds to farmers and making “Roundup” for mass farming production. Looking at you Bayer. Are the hands in the cookie jar? Yes, they are. Read any article about Roundup and Monsanto and you’ll see where I’m going with this. Effective medical practice should BEGIN by improving healthcare within our communities through education and provision of resources. But I digress.
Not only is healthcare a system, but our body is too. Our system is running off specific cells needing energy from our food sources. That same food source (when processed or sprayed with chemicals) can easily eliminate the good bacteria we produce that target the bad bacteria that makes us sick. Combine excessive amounts of bad bacteria in the gut and a random infection from a cold, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for chronic illness that doesn’t go away. Now when we get down to the cellular level, the kind of food we are eating can impact the way our bodily system functions. It can make or break it. When we eat bad, we are depriving our healthy bacteria and our powerhouse cells of nutrients that can be used to fight things like infection, aging, stress, and the effects of environmental toxins.
Which leads me to my last point, if we could change one thing about our health without medicine, what would it be? It would be our food. The biggest indicator of health is from the food we eat. This is attainable if you even have a vertical space to grow. Not only is it attainable, but it is THE answer. Our food from whole organic sources is packed with vitamins and nutrients that our body needs and uses to function. Combine these nutrients and vitamins with exercising, and you are on track to a healthier life for yourself, your family, and your community.
